"Heartbeat"

Think about something for a second.

Just, listen to your heartbeat for a second.

Listen closely, to each pulse, each contraction.

You hear two beats, don't you?

It beats twice with each contraction, very quickly.

Ba-dum. Ba-dum. Ba-dum.

You hear it, don't you?

I feel one beat, but I /hear/ two...

I know who the other beat belongs to.

It makes me feel like I'm holding her heart in my hands, sometimes.

But I'm very gentle with it.

I don't let fragile items fall from my hands.

But I don't hold on so tight that I'm clutching it in a deathgrip.

I'm as gentle as possible...

I sometimes wish rather than just a figment of my imagination,

of holding her heart in my hands,

that I could hold her hands in mine instead.

It would be beautiful.

I couldn't ask for anything more...
